BHK stands for bedroom, hall and kitchen. The number in front is the number of bedrooms. So a 2 BHK home has two bedrooms, one hall (the living room) and one kitchen, usually with at least one bathroom.

What do 1 BHK, 2 BHK and 3 BHK mean?

  • 1 BHK: one bedroom, a living room and a kitchen. Common for singles and couples.
  • 2 BHK: two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The most searched size for small families.
  • 3 BHK: three bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. Suits larger families or people who want a home office or guest room.
  • 4 BHK and above: four or more bedrooms, mostly in villas and larger apartments.

What does 1 RK mean, and what is a studio?

RK means room and kitchen. A 1 RK has one room that serves as both bedroom and living space, with a separate kitchen. A studio flat has a single open space that holds the bed, sitting area and kitchen counter, usually with a separate bathroom.

What is not counted in a BHK?

Bathrooms, balconies, a utility area, a store room, a pooja room and a dining area are not counted in the BHK number. Some sellers add words like 2.5 BHK or 2 BHK plus study to describe an extra small room. Ask to see it, and check whether it is a real room with a window and a door.

Does the same BHK mean the same size?

No. Two flats can both be 2 BHK and differ a lot in size, because the number only counts rooms. Compare the area in square feet, and make sure both are quoted the same way. Carpet area is what you can actually use, while built-up and super built-up area include walls and shared spaces. Our guide to carpet, built-up and super built-up area explains the difference, and the area unit converter helps when sizes are given in different units.

How do I pick the right BHK?

  1. Count the people who will live there, and whether anyone needs a work-from-home space.
  2. Decide whether you are renting or buying. A larger home costs more to rent, to maintain and to furnish.
  3. Check the floor plan, not just the BHK label: where the doors, windows and bathrooms are matters as much as the room count.
  4. Look at several homes of your chosen size in the same area before deciding.
