General information, not legal advice. Whether and how tenant details must be given to the police differs by state and city and changes over time. Check your local police website or ask a lawyer.
Ask for proof of identity, proof of work or study, and proof of the tenant's permanent address. Then keep copies safely. Ask only for what you need, because these papers contain personal data that you are responsible for.
In many states and cities, a landlord is expected, or required, to send the tenant's details to the local police station. Some places have an online form on the state police website, and others use a paper form. The purpose is to have a record of who lives where. If the form is mandatory where you live, skipping it can create trouble for you if the tenant is later involved in an offence.
